TPS REPORT

Ghost Town in the Sky
(Maggie Valley, NC)

Ghost Town in the Sky started out in the 1960s as the brainchild of R. B. Coburn.  For many years, it was a very popular tourist destination in the mountains of North Carolina.  But mismanagement and mismaintenance crippled the park, leading to its eventual closing in 2002.

Flash forward to today, and new owners and management have taken huge strides in restoring the park to what it once was (or so I imagine.  While I vaguely recall seeing commercials for the place in the mid to late 90s, they were pretty badly done ads that really made the place look ghetto.  Needless to say, I never made it out there).  In early September, we visited the park along with some of the good folks from the G.A.P. to see what's been done and what's going to get done.

A cursory glance at the park map shows a lot of things that are scheduled for 2008.

While it's unfortunate that they were unable to get everything up and running for this season, I was mightily impressed with what they did have going.  From some of the pictures I've seen of the park prior to the ownership-change, there was an insane amount of work necessary to get the park to the level that it is today.  Regardless of all that, the 2008 additions guarantee we'll be seeing more of this park next year.

Upon our arrival at the top of the mountain, we were escorted to the rides area.  The first ride on everyone's list seemed to be the Tumbleweed...

Credit whores.

After everyone got their credits, we continued on through the ride area.

Ah, the "Your Mom" ride came out really nicely.

You will NEVER get me on another one of these things.  Well, not unless you insult my manhood or something.

Don't give in to peer pressure kids.  And don't do crack.  It's a ghetto drug.

This is Geronimo Drop, Ghost Town's rather short drop tower.

At a mere 98 feet, I can barely see why anyone would want to get on this.

Well, unless you add on the additional 4,000 or so feet above sea level that you're already at.  Then it becomes a little more clear.

This is the view from the top of Geronimo Drop

Yeah, that's pretty much the most terrifying drop tower around.  The ride operator was nice enough to leave us hanging up there so we could all take pictures and shoot video.  Spending three minutes that high up really puts thing in perspective.
